Foraging – Pear Picking
Jo takes a stroll into the meadow which was once an orchard and picks herself some Pears.
This particular pear tree is very old and very beautiful.
Stunning Tree
In spring in early some of this tree was absolutely stunning with really pretty white flowers and you could see lots of little insects buzzing about doing their business and this is a result of over the summer.
There are a lot of pears just within picking distance which is very handy.
I had a look online to see when I should be picking them and apparently you still want them firm on the outside because they write them from the inside out so over the time they feel ripe on the outside they’re gonna be rotten on the inside and these still feel firm, so I’m gonna get a bag full and then I’m going to, you know, make lots of nice things from them but the ones that really won’t come off,
I’m gonna go with aren’t ripe yet. But these, just a sharp tug and they’re
off.
I absolutely love old trees.
They’re so full of character and the fact that this one produces fruit is just a bonus really.
I mean look at that. Isn’t it lovely?
I don’t know what kind of pear it is, but on the market that would be a reject.
It would be too misshapen too small.
If anybody knows what kind of pears these are let me know in the comments below cuz I’d be quite interested to find out.
This tree as you can see is very very old.
It’s gnarled and knotty in its bowed with the wind, but it’s still hanging on one of those the few trees around here that bear fruit that are hanging on.
And it’s very pretty all year round. It’s got beautiful white flowers in the spring, and it looks like this now and what more could you ask for really?
I don’t know how many more seasons this trees got. A lot of the limbs are odd angles, and it looks like it stiff breeze might blow them off.
So this could be one of the last fruit picking years that this tree has.
It’s just a shame because there’s only one other fruit bearing pear tree here
I mean there are lots of other fruit trees but only three of them have actually given us fruit this year.
I don’t know. Could be wrong. I know nothing about these things.
It’s been around for a long time and hopefully it’ll see many more Springs and many more summers.
I’ve got enough pears for today.
So I’m not going to visit the other pear tree, but what I’ve got here I’m going to take to the homestead and store them ready for when I want to make my pies and chutneys or whatever it is I decide to make.
I’m going to make films about me making pies and chutneys and whatever else it is I decide to make.
So if you want to see that, don’t forget to subscribe like and share.
